WhigFest organizers: “Deteriorating foundation” at Ybor’s Cuban Club means new schedule, stages

It’s now a single-day, multi-stage party.

It’ll always be near-impossible to match the over-the-top eclectic feel of the lineup at WMNF’s now-on-hiatus/in-cruise-mode Tropical Heatwave, but a new-to-Ybor music festival now has a chance.

WhigFest — which intially established itself on St. Pete’s First Block — took a break in 2016, but its founders made plans to revive it in Ybor City in 2018 by staging a two-day party at the Cuban Club. Now, the itinerary has changed just a bit.

WhigFest 2018: Umphrey’s McGee to headline festival’s return in Ybor City October 10, 2017 With Tropical Heatwave no longer in the picture, might WhigFest become the multi-venue music festival Ybor City needs?

After a three-year hiatus, the festival, which ran at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg until 2015, will make its Ybor City debut on Feb. 17 and 18 on three stages at the Cuban Club and the Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing. Chicago jam-rock fusionists Umphrey’s McGee will headline with a three-hour fest on Sunday, Feb. 18. A Saturday night headliner will be announced soon.

Among the other 20-plus bands planned so far for WhigFest 2018: Stokeswood, Polyenso, Forrest Hoffar, Swimm, J.T. Brown, Mountain Holler and Kristopher James.

Joel Cummins Talks Whigfest in Interview with Metrospirit

“The interesting thing is that there are so many festivals out there now. I think the first question you want to ask yourself is if you want to camp or if you prefer staying in a more city environment or hotel room. That’s a big one for me. I know a really good one that a lot of our friends do that’s in the southeast is called Whigfest in Tampa, Florida. They do that President’s Day weekend. That’s a really cool event and it’s right in Ybor City in Tampa, which is a pretty historic district. That’s one that comes to mind.”
